RESTORE OREGON

MCM DESIGN SERIES

MAY 10-11, 2019

Rummer Fun was one of five MCM homes featured in the 2019 home tour focusing on historically sensitive renovations.

It was very fun to meet so many MCM enthusiasts and talk about our home renovation projects and options available for anybody renovating their midcentury home.

Check out the feature article in The Oregonian.

Will the Bamboo Survive?

My mom had some bamboo growing in her yard that she wanted gone and thought it might work for our side yard. The bamboo is tall! It's at least 15 feet tall and plenty to start our bamboo forest. We decided to start with a few clumps and see how they do. Digging up...

Bathroom Tile Update

The tile is ordered! It's the custom blend classic tiles from Hakatai (mentioned in an earlier post), and will be delivered in mid-August. Today's design plan includes keeping the tub. We have gone back and forth on whether the tub stays or goes, but now (I believe)...

New House Numbers on Order!

We're working quite a bit on the house exterior and landscaping this summer. (Steve's actually caulking and prepping the beams for paint right now!) I ordered new numbers for the front of the house and they will be here in about 3-5 weeks! Yikes! They are custom...

Cutest Vanity… in the World!

Okay, maybe not the world, but it is adorable.Found it through a post on the Mid-Century Modern League forum. And it was FREE! (Thanks, Heather, for the great find! It will be very happy in our home.) Love the rounded corner and shelves. The sink is amazing. It's...

Clean Slate

The backyard is amazing, but extremely overgrown. It is truly a "mature" landscape. We tackled the wisteria last year and need to attack it again. The larger issue, however, is how to deal with all the ivy (it's everywhere) and the huge clematis that grows up all over...

Seattle Shopping Spree!

Steve and I took a weekend to get away from all the house chores and escaped to Seattle for our 17th anniversary. I have lived in Portland my whole life (except for the college years) and had never been to Seattle... to see Seattle. We've been up there for band stuff...

Ready to order tile!

Found a great tile source: www.hakatai.comYou can create your own custom blend from the stock tile colors and view a generated image of the final blend. Pretty slick... and it won't break the bank. Here's the blend we will order for the bathroom!I think we have...

Down to the studs!

Yup... the small bathroom is nothing but 2x4s and plumbing. In tearing out the tile on the walls around the bathtub, I discovered that a poorly covered former soap dish recess (patched with a 12x12 vinyl tile) had leaked and the studs behind it were covered in a icky...

The Coolest Gift Ever!

We bought this house nearly a year ago. Wow! Time flies when you are working on projects. Yesterday our Realtors came over with an anniversary gift... a pen and ink illustration of the front of our house. It was so thoughtful and I really like how it shows the two...

Gettin’ back to work

Our vacation from home improvement has come to an abrupt end. Last weekend we started our quest for indoor tropical plants for the atrium. After a few disappointing stops we found ourselves at the Portland Nursery on SE Division near I-205. They have three large rooms...

These are a few of our favorite things…

Renovation motivation is very low! So we spent one gloomy, rainy day in January snapping pictures of the things that make us smile. I know it's just stuff... but it was a fun way to fill the afternoon.Just got the floor lamp back from the Rainbow Lampshade Shop! They...

WHO ARE THESE PEOPLE?!

Steve – Writes commercials, plays drums and tennis (often with vintage rackets), and digs MCM style.

Haley Is an amazing graphic designer and lady-boss, is developing an obsession with travel, puts up with noisy band practices, and also digs MCM style.

Steve was born in SoCal, raised in NorCal and has lived in the Great Pacific Northwest for many many years. Haley was born and raised nearby in NE Portland.

Together they’re attempting the seemingly impossible; to bring this great house back to its MCM Grandeur and raise two nutty kids (who are now adults!) …and not drive each other crazy in the process!

Life is kooky, but always a fun adventure!

PLAN B… THE TRAILER

Just in case the whole home restoration thing doesn’t work out! We have a ’56 Airstream Safari that we’re restoring in our spare time. 🙂
